Hypoallergenic, Non-Dyed & Non-Bleached

Cashmere goats across Mongolia naturally produce four distinct fiber colors: white, beige, taupe, and the exceptionally rare warm grey. At GOBI, we believe in offering not just luxurious softness but also products that respect your health and the environment. That’s why our organic cashmere is thoughtfully crafted to be hypoallergenic, non-dyed, and non-bleached—preserving the natural beauty and gentle touch of this precious fiber. Here’s how our Organic line differs:
  • Avoiding harsh chemicals in our organic line preserves gentle quality.
  • Perfect for those prone to skin irritation or allergies.
  • Organic cashmere keeps its natural color without using dyes.
  • Reduces water pollution and chemical waste by skipping artificial coloring.
While our organic line is non-dyed, for other collections, we use only Huntsman dyes—trusted for their high standards and eco-friendly properties. Additionally, we’re OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, guaranteeing that everything we make is free from harmful substances and safe for you to wear. This means whether organic or dyed, GOBI Cashmere is always a healthy, responsible choice.

The Organic Collection not only reduces environmental impact but also preserves the natural colors of the cashmere, making the products more eco-friendly. The absence of dyes allows for chemical-free production, offering products that are harmless to the environment and providing customers with a more comfortable and sustainable wearing experience.

Meet the Mongolian Goats Behind the Colors

As of 2024, Mongolia is home to approximately 23 million goats, forming the backbone of the country’s thriving cashmere industry. Mongolian goats, particularly the native cashmere-producing breeds, are the unsung heroes behind the luxurious softness and natural hues of high-quality cashmere. These goats thrive in Mongolia's harsh climates, developing exceptionally fine undercoats that are hand-combed each spring to produce the prized fiber.

  • White Goats of the Gobi Desert: Medium-sized goats with sun-shaped horns and crystal-black eyes roam the hot Gobi Desert (+40°C). Their fine, light cashmere is perfect for natural, breathable, and soft organic clothing.
  • Reddish-Brown Goats from the Steppe: The most common across Mongolia’s vast steppes, yellow and reddish-brown goats produce beige cashmere prized for its natural elasticity and silky texture.
  • Rare Blue-Grey Goats of Western Mongolia: Making up only 2% of Mongolia’s goat population, these rare goats from remote western regions yield warm grey cashmere known for exceptional softness and strength—among the finest in the world.
  • Brown Goats from Forested Mountains: Found in central and northern forested mountains, dark brown goats produce rich taupe cashmere. The harsh climate and diverse terrain contribute to their fibers’ impressive length and durability.

The Organic Way of Mongolian Herders

For centuries, Mongolian herders have lived in harmony with nature, practicing a truly organic way of life that remains unchanged to this day. Their goats roam free across the vast steppes and desert plains, including the harsh yet beautiful regions, grazing naturally without the use of chemicals, hormones, or additives. Mongolian cashmere goats follow a natural, self-selected diet by grazing freely across open landscapes, feeding on wild grasses, herbs, and shrubs native to the steppes and desert. These nutrient-rich plants vary with the seasons and contribute to the softness and strength of their cashmere. Herders practice rotational grazing, moving their herds regularly across vast pastures.
This traditional method prevents overgrazing, allows the land to regenerate and ensures the goats have continual access to fresh forage, sustaining both the environment and the superior quality of GOBI cashmere. This time-honored tradition not only respects the land but also yields some of the finest natural fibers on Earth. It’s a testament to sustainable living, where every strand of cashmere reflects the purity of the environment and the deep-rooted knowledge of generations of herders.

From Goat to Garment: Our Organic Process

An organic piece of cashmere clothing goes through a thoughtful, multi-step journey across three specialized factories before it finally reaches your hands—ready to be worn, cherished, and lived in.
It all starts at our Primary Factory, where raw cashmere—gathered during Mongolia’s natural molting season from mid-March to early July—arrives at the Sorting Workshop. Here, skilled workers hand-sort the fibers by four natural shades: white, beige, taupe, and the rare and uniquely Mongolian warm grey. They also classify the fibers by quality and dandruff levels to ensure only the best move forward. After sorting, the raw cashmere is thoroughly washed and sent through a dehairing machine, which separates the soft cashmere fibers from any dirt, dandruff, or coarse hairs—resulting in clean, fine combed cashmere.
The journey continues to our Spinning Factory, where the combed cashmere is typically dyed—but in the case of organic products, this step is skipped to preserve their natural beauty. The undyed fibers are spun into high-quality yarns, forming the foundation of your organic cashmere wear.
Finally, the yarns are brought to the Knitting Factory, where advanced knitting machines shape them into garments. Each piece is then carefully hand-assembled by our experienced team. Every stage is held to the highest standards of quality control, ensuring the final product is something you can feel proud to wear.
Organic cashmere isn’t just a luxury—it’s a conscious choice. Sourced from free-roaming goats in the vast, untouched steppes of Mongolia, organic cashmere wear is produced without harmful chemicals, dyes, or synthetic treatments. From start to finish, every step respects both nature and traditional craftsmanship.
Unlike conventional methods, organic cashmere clothing retains its natural colors—white, beige, taupe, and the rare warm grey—without being dyed. This preserves the softness of the fibers and significantly reduces environmental impact. The result? A garment that feels better on your skin and is gentler on the planet. Whether you're reaching for an organic cashmere sweater on a crisp morning or wrapping yourself in an organic cashmere cardigan for cozy evenings, each piece offers timeless style, natural comfort, and peace of mind.
Every item is traceable, responsibly made, and crafted to the highest standards. By choosing organic cashmere, you’re supporting ethical sourcing, animal welfare, and the livelihoods of Mongolian herders.

FAQs

What is organic cashmere, and how is it different from regular cashmere?

Unlike regular cashmere, organic cashmere is processed with strict environmental and animal welfare standards and skips dyeing or bleaching. The result is cashmere in its purest, most natural form—safer for both your skin and the planet.

Is GOBI Cashmere’s organic collection truly non-dyed?

Yes. Every item in GOBI’s organic collection is completely non-dyed and chemical-free. We preserve the natural fiber colors—white, beige, taupe, and Mongolia’s exclusive warm grey—to maintain authenticity and minimize environmental impact.

Why are the natural colors of Mongolian goats unique?

Mongolian goats naturally produce rare and beautiful fiber shades. Among them is warm grey, a color found only in Mongolia. These unique hues eliminate the need for artificial dyeing, making each piece naturally elegant and environmentally conscious.

Is organic cashmere suitable for people with sensitive skin?

Absolutely. Since organic cashmere is free from dyes, bleaches, and harsh chemicals, it’s especially gentle on sensitive skin. The fibers remain soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic—making it a perfect choice for those who prioritize comfort and skin safety.

How does GOBI support eco-friendly fashion practices?

GOBI promotes sustainability by using traceable sourcing, maintaining chemical-free processing, and supporting local herders and artisans. Our entire supply chain is designed to reduce environmental harm while preserving traditional Mongolian craftsmanship.

Can organic cashmere still be colorful?

While it doesn’t come in bright or dyed colors, organic cashmere celebrates the natural, earthy tones of the goats themselves. The white, beige, taupe, and warm grey shades offer timeless elegance—proving that color doesn’t need to be artificial to be beautiful.
